spring in denver? really?

it's true - i feel like we are really getting a taste of spring in denver this year.  60 degrees for many days in a row - playing outside - wearing shorts - and a trip to the zoo!
we loved seeing the giraffes - they were inside and even bigger than i ever imagined

little picnic lunch

always a favorite - the elephants!

even kate liked her trip to the zoo and slept nearly the whole time.
ps.  she is getting so chubby - i love it!

80's throwback

a tribute to all you Chimney Lakes girls who read the blog...does this shirt look familiar?
Richard and I played in our 5th Wooden Open here in Denver - a wooden racket tennis tournament put on by some friends out here.  What a fun afternoon & evening!
We didn't make it quite as far as we did last year, but we had a great time and Brooks was such a trooper.  It was the hottest day in two years out here - 102 degrees!
Other than wearing my tennis shirt from about 1988, the highlight of the night was Richard scaling and falling over a fence in the middle of a point to try to make an incredible return!  (and you say i'm the competitive one this this house!)

Spring is Springing

sort of...
we have had a few nice days in Denver these past few weeks (although it was hailing and 40 today) and we are enjoying every minute of sunshine after the long winter.

can't wait to plant flowers, bbq and enjoy warmer weather in the weeks to come

Happy Easter

Just a few fun pics from our Denver 2010 Easter celebration.
Richard was able to switch work with a friend to get the day off and we enjoyed morning church and a great afternoon meal and games with friends.  the Lewises always throw a great Easter complete with a kids and an adult easter egg hunt.  this year we also played "battle of the sexes" family fued, Spring/Easter addition!  congrats to the boys and especially Richard who pulled out two key answers!

get your hands off my eggs!

Hoping for another Roctober

As we near the end of the regular season, Denver is alive with Rockies fever, and just as in 2007, the fuquays are totally hooked! Even the newest Denver Fuquay is a big fan of the hometown team!
With only six more games to go in the regular season and a wild card bid at stake, every game is do or die. So, on Saturday night, we decided at the last minute to head downtown to catch a big came against St. Louis. After Brooks' first attempt to scalp tickets, we gave in and bought real tickets up in left field (some of the "worst" in the park). It was a sell out crowd and once Brooks got used to all the noise, he had a great time.
Brooks loved his first major league baseball game and stayed awake until we were heading home at 9:30! He didn't want to miss a play or a chance to wave at all the people sitting around us. Although the Rockies didn't pull it out that night, we had a great time - it was definitely a night to remember!

Not your typical cooking blog

So, a few weekends ago, our husbands were out of town/working and Emily and I decided to have a girls night in. We put the little guys to bed and tried out a new cookie recipe that promised to make better chocolate chip cookies in our high altitude. Success!

For other denver bakers...here are the tips!
1. crisco instead of butter
2. less brown sugar
3. less baking soda
4. no electric mixer - just a big spoon

ps. Richard came home to find us giddy in the kitchen, and yes, we were wearing completely matching outfits - totally unplanned!

no white christmas

so, for the last two years, we have had friends and family flying into denver around christmas and new years only to be met with two of the biggest snowfalls (aka blizzards) ever. this year, richard and i were on our own for christmas and of course, no snow at all! in fact - it was 60 degrees here yesterday!
here are a few pics from our quiet holiday...

richard may have had a little two much fun getting the turkey ready!
but we were so proud of our first turkey on our own. with only 10 calls to our parents for advice, it came out great!

the stovalls joined us for christmas dinner and brought yummy sides for all to enjoy. it was a great meal that we were still enjoying 5 days later thanks to the leftovers!

even without any turkey, dirk was in a tryptophan coma christmas night from all the excitement

This really was my first rodeo!

how cool is the rodeo?!?

we went a couple of weeks ago to the National Western Stock Show & Rodeo here in Denver with the Mitchells and the Lokeys - what a random friday night! the mutton bustin' was my favorite, where they put little kids on the back of a sheep wearing pads and a helmet (the kids, not the sheep). whoever stays on the longest wins! i really wanted to give it a try!

Merry Christmas

Merry Christmas 2007!

The Fuquays and Schulzs joined us in Denver for Christmas again this year, and we all had a great time for about five days at our new house. The dogs were spoiled with all the love from our visitors, and we were spoiled with great food, great gifts and great company.

We also had a quick trip to Breckenridge for the day to ski. Unfortunately, the cold temps and 40 mile an hour winds made for a short day on the slopes! We headed home for warm food and more rounds of Bananagrams (like speed scrabble - check it out!).

December in Denver

December was a great month in Denver with a little snow and a lot of great time with friends.
We had a fun night out with the Lewises and Cahills in Larimer Square and the 16th Street Mall walking and looking at all the great downtown decorations and holiday lights. We ended the evening out at the famous Brown Palace Hotel - so pretty!

We also hit the slopes in Vail for a fun weekend of skiing with Matt Talley and his fiancee Anne and her family. While pretty cold, it was a great time and also a great dinner Saturday night at Sapphire! Yum Yum!
